Magic: The Gathering Preview Card – Crimson Vow
We’re very honoured as a WPN Premium store to bring you a global exclusive preview of a card from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, Crimson Vow!
Returning to Innistrad for the second time this year we are now all heading to a Vampire Wedding. Our preview card gives us a clue of some of the other inclusions in the set and we can’t wait to see what else is going to be included in the set which caps off an amazing year for Magic.
Without further ado, we are proud to share with you all, the Cloaked Cadet!
Cloaked Cadet is drawn by the super talented Igor Kieryluk (https://www.facebook.com/IgorKierylukArt/) who created the art for some store favourite cards the Commander Legends Fyndhorn Elves, Elesh Norn, Grand Ceonobite and the Core Set 2021 version of Grim Tutor.
This uncommon Human Ranger gives us a glimmer into what else is going on in Innistrad with the set focused on the Vampire wedding with the Markov and Voldaren families joining together. This Human Ranger hints at the set including not only other Humans but also a new mechanic, Training.
Training gives you the benefit of buffing the creature up permanently while attacking with another creature of greater power. Cloaked Cadet gives you this benefit then a bonus where you get to draw a card once per turn whenever a +1/+1 counter is put on a Human you control.
We feel this card has a great home in the Commander format, particularly with the most recent Coven Counters Commander precon deck from Midnight Hunt. In the deck, Commanded by the Human Nobel Leinore, Autumn Sovereign.
This deck, like other counter based decks, heavily features a Green base and with the inclusion of White gives the option for upgrading to a human tribal force that grows wide quickly and buffs those white weenies to go over the top of your opponents. The cost of 5 mana can easily be paid in Green and initially using the Cloaked Cadet as an engine to draw until you get enough on the board to drop some massive creatures on the battlefield to intimidate your opponents.
Don’t like that idea? EDHREC has 1949 Witchmaw, 1636 Green, 1439 Selesnya and 1446 Abzan decks which can also easily include our Cloaked Cadet. Hamza, Vorinclex and Ezuri are just a few of our favourites. https://edhrec.com/themes/p1-p1-counters
Cloaked Cadet should also see some play in Standard with Selesnya counters starting to see some resurgence in Standard 2022. We think it will be a good fit with the decks that feature Humans like Star Pupil, Luminarch Aspirant and Dragonsguard Elite that work towards getting out Vorinclex and Froghemoth. Who doesn’t enjoy humans that allow you to play a Frog Horror with Trample and Haste!
Cloaked Cadet can also work well with the Coven mechanic first introduced in Midnight Hunt where benefits are gained when you control creatures of different powers.
We’ll have to wait to see the other cards in the Crimson Vow set, however with it being an uncommon (the usual first go to for draft format) hopefully we see more Humans that interact well with the card so that Cloaked Cadet shines in the Limited format.
